Migrating from Joomla 1.0.x To Joomla 1.5.x

Written by Miguel
migratorJoomla has become very popular amongst open source Content Management Solutions. Like most of it’s competitors, it is constantly evolving and it is important to keep your CMS up to date to benefit from the system and security updates.

The latest stable Joomla version available is 1.5.15. Depending on your website requirements, you might have considered upgrading to the latest Joomla version. Here’s how you can achieve such an upgrade with very little downtime.

First, I recommend you backup your current Joomla 1.0 website, incase you ever need to restore it. Then download and install the Migrator component.

Once installed, select the Migrator from the components menu in your Joomla administration backend. Click on the Create Migration SQL File link. When completed, click on the Download link and save the migration file to your local drive.

Next, download the latest Joomla 1.5 installation package and make a clean installation. When you reach step 6 of the installation procedure, select the radio button option entitled Load Migration Script.

Fill in the Old Table Prefix (default is _jos), and browse to select the migration file you saved to your local drive. Tick the option “This script is a Joomla 1.0.x migration script”, and click on the Upload and Execute button and continue your Joomla installation.

When the installation completes, your Joomla content from the previous version will be available in your new Joomla 1.5 installation.

Important: Please note that this upgrade procedure only covers your Joomla content. To upgrade your components, modules, plugins and templates, please refer to each extension’s documentation.
