Video Optimization for Websites

Written by Chris Jacoby
Pros of having video content on your website:

If you have a blog or website with articles or posts, you can add a video to be unique and set yourself apart from other websites and from your competitor’s websites. More and more people love to watch video as compared to reading text. YouTube is great example of this. Adding videos to your website can greatly increase your target audience and increase traffic to your website.

Video explains better and it’s easier to understand the concepts you are trying to portray. It will attract many visitors to your site. For example if you have launched a new product or service, you can run you own little video advert on your website easily allowing visitors to watch and learn about it. With videos on your site, you are able interact with your visitors in a much stronger, more direct way. Secondly, if you want to develop your personal brand, video could help with that.

Video optimization is the best way to reach your customers. There are many video sites available from where you can promote your video such as YouTube, Metacafe etc.

Cons of having video content on your website: Casual videos can be shot on the spot in your own home or office. If you want to produce something more professional, you will need to work on the setup, script and related activities. In other words, you will need to work even before you start shooting the video. Many companies do this to portray a more professional image to their target audience. Shooting a video can be difficult work! After that you need a sufficient time for editing and uploading a video. Choosing the right format, video platform and player are also areas that will need attention. Videos also uses up more bandwidth depending on how many visitors are watching your videos and how long and large your videos are.

Video is not optimal for search engines. Google and other search engines are evolving fast regarding how they index videos. According to the search engine, text is still king. It’s always better to have both text and video when considering video on your site for two reasons; those who have slower internet speeds and so that Google can index your page to generate more traffic to your site.

Overall conclusion: Videos are great, and are definitely worth a try. Video is certainly going to be a huge part of the web in the coming years, and the sooner you get used to it, the better.
