Microsoft Drills the Social Marketing in Search Featured

Microsoft Pushes deeper into Search

The battle of the search engines continues with more functionality piggy backing on the Google +1 feature. The Bing search engine is making the search results more relevant to the user considering his or her Likes on Facebook.likethumb_75x67

The search engine will now return results showing which of your friends has "Liked" the web page. This can easily distort search engines because the rankings will push up the results where your friends have "Liked" the website. This could prove to be the breaking of SEO on Bing for some. The Bing searches drill a little bit deeper when it comes to high traffic websites like Mashable. This will display which of your friends has liked which article. This gives the end user a better insight into the website and potential the stuff that their friends are searching for. I don't really see how this integration will help with SEO.

Not only does bing follow your friends and what they have liked, if the website has a facebook profile and no likes, it may display its facebook status. These will appear int he search results to show the latest information found from the search. These updates are surely going to bring a host of new users to the bing search engine. This innovation is pushing forward along the lines of Google ratings but as we know that Microsoft is a big investor in facebook it is in their best interests to link the two together in as many ways as they can. Just as they have done with the purchase of Skype earlier this month.

The integration drills deeper into your friends profiles, for instance if you search for something that is in France, the result will display the friends you currently have in France. This will apply to the search query and whether the person has "liked" anything in regards to the search, bit thie integration of information is to make it easier for the user to perhaps ask his or her friend about the French related question. This is quite a nifty touch for those of us who are looking for answers from friends instead of websites. The sharing options which have impressed me the most is the sharing it has when creating a shopping list or a testimonial.

The new sharing options will allow the user to instantly share their travel testimony or shopping list with their friends on facebook. In one easy click you can let your friends know about that luxury holiday or divine new pair of shoes.

The final option is the very cool Bing toolbar, this toolbar incorporates a new Universal Like button. This allows you to like any website regardless if they have a facebook profile or a like button on their site.

Bing is closing the gap but has a very long way to go. But the hope is that Bing can only go in one direction, and that is up!
