Television vs Web TV: where is the future of our visual Informer Featured

Written by Thom Henderson
The takeover is upon us. Google started owning the internet a decade ago, recently it has sped up 10 fold to take over our telephone lines using Gtalk voice VOIP calls and soon enough that will a basic feature of the internet. Compile the internet, your telephone and the newest incarnation bringing Google to your tv. This latest development will merge our digital television with online search.

This is already available with superfast ADSL connections. Webtv and web search television gives the end user a huge amount of freedom when choosing what he wants to watch. The entire YouTube database is fully available and there are dedicated HD channels to not limit yourself to poor home videos.

Include in this the fact that there are hundreds of television networks that currently put their shows online to promote their own web services to their customers. This is the norm for first world countries with hi speed standard connections. This however didn’t solve the problem of watching a film on your pc. Now with Google boxes soon to replace our current top boxes, or in the near future, The TV with built in Google TV, allowing full search functionality. All TV shows, all the time and everything on the internet as well.

A truly amazing feat would see normal broadcasters jaws drop as they now ponder how they are going to get paid now because Google offers them all. The American companies ABC CBS and NBC are blocking their websites from Google’s service. How this will affect them is up to the viewers to decide. Surely this model of searching content and getting it gratis cannot be sustained for very long. Already advertisers are strung out over the proposed new Google TV advertising system which very may well cut into the $80 billion that is spent on current TV advertising which will add to Google’s $24 billion earned by its online advertising platform. The future is certain and the specifics will be dealt with in normal time, but the future is fast approaching and whether we are ready will only be decided by the effects that these new developments create. We cannot guess as to how they will affect us, I mean look what happened to the music industry ;-}
