What is Search Engine Optimisation?

Written by Steven Swemmer
What is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is the process of optimizing a web site to improve traffic generated to the site through search engines via natural (un-paid) search results. This is done by making your web pages more relevant, more attractive and more easily readable for both humans and search engines. A web site normally receives more traffic from the search engine the higher it is ranked.

Search engines use programs called crawlers, spiders or robots to view and index your site. They travel from page to page and store links and relevant text. The search engines constantly improve how indexing works to help provide users with relevant websites and filter out spam. Here are some of our best SEO practices...

Various SEO practices to improve web site ranking are used some are -
  • Link Building: The more quality external websites that link to your website increases your sites authority in the eyes of the search engine. (Weighs heavily in Google’s indexing)
  • Keywords: Keywords should be featured in many places on your website and help people to find it when using a search engine. Titles, page content, meta tags, URL’s, image paths and alt text should all contain the relevant keywords. (Weighs heavily in Yahoo and Microsoft indexing)
  • Content: The content should be unique, relevant, of a high quality and easily readable. The keywords should appear frequently and naturally within the text.
  • Meta tags: While they do not have a large impact with search engines to determine relevancy, it is displayed and can help draw the user to view your site.

There are two main types of SEO – White hat and black hat. White hat SEO produces results that last a long time while black hat may get the websites ranking lowered or removed from the search engines results altogether. White hat sticks to the search engines guidelines and involves no deception. It uses the content that the user will see to acquire its ranking. Black hat tries to improve rankings using underhanded means often involving deception. It uses hidden or off screen text to improve rankings temporarily and displays different content to the user that they may not be what they were searching for.
