Recently at the Web 2.0 summit in San Francisco, an unlikely speaker took the podium to announce a new search engine he is launching. There are many features to make your account more secure yet we ignore these thinking that it just won’t happen to me. Well it will and it is more common than you thing. Let’s go through some of the latest updates to Facebooks security systems.

Why Must I Blog?

Written by Thom Henderson
blogBlogging has been around for much longer than we give it credit for. The openness of the internet can be discussed as anyone with a keyboard has a voice. Opinions, discussions, arguments and other complete garbage have been sprawled across the net for decades. The beginning of a “blog” can be attributed to the outspoken characters we find on the various message boards across cyberspace.

Facebook Continues to Evolve

Written by Candice Winterboer
Those of you with your ears to the ground would have heard last week that Facebook has once again caused a stir. The announcement was made that FB will be rolling out a new 'modern messaging system' which is set to change messaging, email, sms and chat - as we know them.

You are addicted to social media if…

Written by Candice Winterboer
With the barrage of new media platforms which have changed the way we interact online, it is easy to understand how some people can become confused as to how to interact in real life. Spending hours on Facebook stalking an ex-boyfriend or following someone on Twitter just to be able to find out where they hang out (with the intention of 'bumping' into them) is no longer reserved for the crazy and the deranged.

Online Information Trafficking

Written by Thom Henderson

pigspotterNow I just made this term up inspired from a twitter user doing something that I heard on the radio in Australia about 8 years ago.

This was the trafficking of information on traffic police. In Australia it was always on every news broadcast, half hourly, where the radio stations would let the listeners know exactly where all the mobile speed traps and road blocks were. Here in Sunny South Africa we ask twitter user Pigspotter

I wrote a post not so long ago which included some stats to try and convince any nay-sayers out there that Social Media is here to stay and unless you embrace it, you will be left in the dust of your competitors. While brushing up on some stats for another project, I came across this video called ‘Social Media Revolution’ which is a visual representation of some very interesting stats.

Social Media Goals and Strategy

Written by Candice Winterboer

As with most things business related, you need a strategy to help guide you through the various processes and keep you on track towards your goal.  In this sentence alone I have probably mentioned two things which you never even considered when diving, head-first into the world of Social Media, so I think at this point it might be a good idea to stop what you are doing and just take a few minutes to read this…

Social Media working for Charities!

Written by Candice Winterboer
My last post outlined a few examples on how social media has worked in helping to create awareness for non-profit organizations. On my search to find a few more interesting facts on this topic I came across a slideshow which I thought I would share because it illustrates the stats involved around social networks, within the non-profit environment specifically.

Why Social Media works wonders with NPO’s

Written by Candice Winterboer
thumb_NPO_ImageAs a Non-Profit charity or trust, especially one which is just starting out, cash (as with any new business) is hard to come by and even harder to part with when it is in the direction of something new – like Social Media. However, if you can wrap your head around the concept, even if you don't understand all the nuances which come with the territory, then you will address the issues of awareness and support which are part and parcel with the business of fundraising.

Reputation Management 101

Written by Candice Winterboer
rep1Many companies in South Africa employ what I call the 'Ostriching' strategy, which follows the theory that if you stick your head in the ground (ignore what is being said), it will just disappear after which you can carry on as if nothing has happened. Unfortunately this strategy is inherently flawed and now with the channels of communication being easy to access and even easier to spread, you want to make sure that you are informed about who is saying what about you and then take the appropriate actions to deal with it – unlike Hyundai.
The saying goes: 'There are many ways to skin a cat' and the same applies to Social Media. You can set up your Fan Page or group and your Twitter account and interact on those platforms, but if you have all of that running like a well oiled machine then I'd suggest stepping it up a notch with blog and forum participation.

One of the best ways to get your name out there is to participate on industry related blogs and forums. The aim of participating is to try and build a network within your industry, there are people on these blogs and forums who are asking questions and looking for answers which you may have – they just need to know that you are out there.
