Blog Posts for Beginners

Written by Candice Winterboer

blogging101There are a myriad of reasons why a blog is important to have in terms of online marketing but that is not what this post is about.  This post is on how to write for your brand new blog, which you already know is uber important for you business but you just don’t know where to start.

There are a few simple rules to follow although above all you should remember to write as if you are speaking to real people because essentially, the people out there ARE real so treat them as such.

I’ve limited this list to what I think are the most important points to remember:

Consistency is king

Many people think you need to write every day to make a blog successful, now unless your business is blogging, then this is not always true.  I suggest writing a blog post 2 -3 times a week, this doesn’t bombard readers but also keeps them coming back.  If you can only do 1 blog post a week then keep it at that, don’t do 1 one week then 5 the next and 2 the next.

Less is more

When people read online resources they don’t want to spend too much time on one page so keep your blog posts short and to the point.  300 – 500 Words should do the trick although every now and then you can do a longer one if the topic calls for it.

Stick to a theme!!

Let’s take the Go Fish blog as an example.  This blog covers all things related to online marketing which people subscribe to and keep visiting because the information is valuable to them and their businesses.  If we started talking about shopping or travel, not only will our readers get annoyed that the blog they had subscribed to about online marketing is no longer as valuable – but more importantly this will also damage your reputation with Google.

Structure Matters

Structure your writing so that your readers will find it easy to read everything.  Use things like bullet points, short sentences and break your writing into small paragraphs.

Pictures speak louder than words

I like including an image with every single blog post I write.  An images makes the blog post a little more interesting to look at and might help people remember the topic more than if it were just plain text.

Linking

In every single post make sure that you either link to a relevant resource like Wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blog or another website.  You can also link to your own posts and even to your main website; just remember that if you blow your own horn too many times you will soon have nobody to hear the blowing.

If you keep these points in mind while writing then you are on the right track.  Some companies just don’t have the resources to write their own blog posts, in this case you can outsource the writing to a company like Alfalfa Content Generator (http://alfalfacontentgenerator.com/ ), who specialises in optimised online content.  If you are still battling to put pen to paper (or fingers to keys) then have a look at these helpful pages for inspiration:
