Google Launches Latest Results Real-time Search Featured

Written by Dr Peter Fish

Google launched its Latest Results search which brings real-time results right into your Google search results page in the latest results box. These results are fed in from various social media sources such as Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, FriendFeed, JaikuIndenti.ca, Yahoo Answers, blogs and forums amongst others. Have a look at the screen shot below:

The results scroll within the box as they’re indexed in real-time. If you click on the Latest results link you’re navigated to a new, dedicated, latest results page. Here’s another screen shot:

The power of these real-time results is phenomenal! Google has built highly intelligent new algorithm to deal with the ever increasing social commentary additions to the web and without missing a beat has brought it directly to your pc.

This gives you the ability to monitor things in real-time using the multitude of internet savvy people commenting on your desired keyword as your personalised reporters! A week ago a friend of mine opened for a well-known international band 1500km from where I was, unfortunately I couldn’t be at the event, yet by using the real-time portal Monittor I could basically live through the entire event vicariously following the tweets and tweetpics of those that were in the crowd, it was mind blowing. I could really have utilised this a few months ago when the mountain behind my suburb was completely ablaze in the middle of the night with a very vicious fire, I searched Google relentlessly to try finding the breaking news and to find out exactly what was happening. Even the news search took ages to index anything on the disaster and when it did it was so impersonal. Google’s latest addition would have made a massive difference here as every single person who updated some form of social media would have given me an eye witness report! This is going to drastically change how we get our Google-orientated information and what we think is important.

This really reinforces how important a good social media slant is in any online marketing campaign and also how seriously Google feels towards social media and hot topics. You’ve got to use this to your advantage and ensure you keep pumping out updates and links!

Google also announced that it would feed this data into Google Trends. This will allow you to watch the popularity of your chosen terms in a certain time-frame, similar to what Trendistic does for twitter, yet across a much broader social media base, more powerful and it’s free! A must for keeping track of the trends in any industry.
